How to fix a punctured motorcycle tire

Your motorcycle tire can get a flat almost anywhere, not just in the field.

How to fix a punctured motorcycle tire

Most of the punctures I've had on motorcycles have been around town from nails, screws, etc.

If you're lucky, it won't cause an immediate loss of air and therefore traction and control.

Motorcycles equipped with tire pressure sensors, either factory installed or aftermarket, will receive a warning. If not, you can feel the pressure loss through the steering and handling, which becomes heavy and vague.

On a few occasions my tire has picked up a screw or nail blocking air loss and I've only noticed it when I've done my pre and post ride checks, which is why it's so important to do these checks before and after a ride.

Tubeless vs Tubed Tires

There are advantages and disadvantages to tubeless and tubed tires.

A tubeless tire often holds air better after a puncture, allowing you to ride safely. A tubed tire will often lose much more pressure much faster.

It is much more difficult to fix a flat tube tire on the side of the road, but it can be done.

Otherwise, you better have good roadside assistance!

A tubeless tire may be easier to repair with a repair kit, but it limits the life of the tire. Although it's not illegal, it can void your insurance in the event of an accident, so you may need a whole new tire.

How to fix a tubed tire

Repairing a tubed tire requires a lot of tools and usually a reasonable luggage capacity.

You will need tire levers, a puncture repair kit, wrenches and a compact air compressor that runs on the bike's battery, etc.

Rarely can a flat tube be fixed without having to remove the wheel, making it more of a problem. In which case, you may need to transport the bike.

Use the levers to pry the tire off the rim to expose the tube.

To find the leak, spit on the blemishes to see if it bubbles or listen for hiss.

Repair kits include a small piece of sandpaper that is used to rough up the area around the assembly. Then apply the glue and place a patch over the hole.

Reinsert the tube being careful not to twist or pinch it, reattach the tire to the rim and wheel to the bike, reattach the chain if it was the rear wheel, and inflate.

It's a lot of work and difficult on your own, but it can be done.

How to fix a tubeless tire

Most motorcycles come with tubeless or tubeless tires.

They are infinitely easier and faster to fix.

The hole is usually easy to find since there is still a nail, screw, or other object embedded in it.

Pry it out with a screwdriver or pliers.

Your repair kit will have a rasp-like tool that you will then ream in and out of the hole to roughen it up a bit and make good contact with the "worm" glue we'll insert later.

Thread it through the "needle" tool and then pop it into the hole and quickly pull it out.

This will leave the plug in place and you can cut off the excess, leaving about 1cm of plug. How to fix a punctured motorcycle tire

You usually won't lose all the pressure in the tire like you would with a flat tube, so you can reinflate it with two or three cans of compressed air.

Next, it is important to ride the bike for at least 15 minutes at around 80 km/h to heat up the plug so that it adheres to the tire.
